Intercomp’s LS-WIM® Weigh-In-Motion Truck Scale Minimizes Weighing Downtime

Intercomp’s LS-WIM® Weigh-In-Motion Truck Scale System offers an effective means to lower overhead through better inventory management, greater accountability and automated front gate operation.  Keeping trucks moving at all times increases efficiency and minimizes downtime at the gate.

Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) is the ideal weighing solution for high-volume entry and exit gates. Unlike full-length truck scales, incoming and outgoing traffic does not have to stop each time a vehicle needs to be weighed. By allowing traffic flow to continue, the system allows for easy and efficient verification of individual axle weights, axle groups and gross vehicle weights, which law enforcement uses to determine compliance of commercial vehicles.

An example of this is Intercomp’s LS-WIM® System with LS20™ WIM Indicator that provides a stand-alone, efficient, and reliable solution. The scale system measures axle weights of incoming vehicles at the facility’s entrance. The system totalizes axle weights to determine gross vehicle weight (GVW) and can instantly document the NET weight of inbound material by utilizing stored tare weights for up to 250 vehicles, each with a unique ID, for later retrieval from the system.

A wide, 13-foot weighing platform, and up to 100,000lbs load capacity per axle, ensures accurate measurement of just about any type of vehicle and material including oversize loads. In addition to a better handle on inventory figures, the LS-WIM® System offers the ability to convert gate operations to an efficient, unmanned process with the integration of the LS20 CPU. The optional key fob takes efficiency and automation to the next level, allowing vehicle drivers to activate the system without the need to stop and key in an ID number.  Output helps business managers optimize production while also ensuring each vehicle is compliant with commercial vehicle weight limits.

Low-Speed Weigh-in-Motion Scales (LS-WIM™) provide a low cost method for weighing freight

Watching the weight of freight in and out of yards has also historically been challenging for many businesses, often relying on an off-site truck scale to ensure they are not overweight. Fortunately, this solution has presented itself as a viable lower cost, less intrusive option for many businesses: Low-Speed Weigh-in-Motion Scales (LS-WIM™).

For example, bulk items, like aggregate or cement can be difficult to track for the purposes of inventory management. Often, yard managers must estimate quantities to order based on educated guesses, leaving room for errors and wasted investment in the form of excessive ordering’ or showing inventory when actually running low. Without a reliable means of measurement, yard managers are also unable to verify that they have received the amount of product ordered.  Tracking what comes in, and what goes out of any yard is a crucial part of managing inventory. The Weigh-In-Motion weighing solution can capture weight information while keeping traffic moving smoothly.

“We’ve had great success with this product all around the world as a field-proven way to very quickly weigh a large number of trucks efficiently.” – Eric Peterson, Intercomp VP Sales & Marketing

Weigh-in-Motion Systems Are Installed in Existing Vehicle Lanes & Take Up Minimal Space

Regardless of yard size or type of material or freight, Intercomp’s WIM Systems give managers the tools needed to improve efficiency, and decrease waste and unneeded overhead. With a solid understanding of what comes in and goes out, purchasing accountability increases while minimizing material shortages.

With the ability to track incoming and outgoing weights, managers are able to make informed decisions regarding rate of production as it relates to customer demand and supply of raw materials. With too little supply, the facility slows production to a less economical level. Excess supply is equally problematic due to possible downstream supply chain disruptions caused by vehicles serving as auxiliary storage tanks, instead of transporting raw and finished goods.

Physical dimensions and space a weighing system can use is an important distinction, where WIM systems are installed in existing vehicle lanes and minimal space.  Compared to traditional full-length truck scales, the small footprint of the LS-WIM system allows for installation at most facilities, at approximately half the cost, including civil work. The system increases facility efficiency by accurately weighing vehicles traveling up to 10 mph (15 kph). Coupled with the 13-foot (4.14-meter) wide weighbridge, nearly any vehicle, including those with a wide load or trailer, can be quickly screened. Intercomp’s LS-WIM System is ideal for most non-legal-for-trade applications in medium- to high-traffic operations. This technology allows fleet managers to maximize safety and compliance while maintaining efficient entry and exit procedures.

Additional Benefits of an Intercomp LS-Weigh In Motion System

Additional options include the ability to have individual axle and gross weight data shown on high-visibility LED displays, allowing drivers to verify they have a full load while remaining axle weight compliant. This is all done without the need to stop and retrieve a weigh ticket or talk to a scale attendant. Weight data collected by the scale system also allows managers to study and determine the most efficient operational procedures for the yard.  In addition to investments in hardware and civil works being minimal, operational costs for the scale system are contained due to a straightforward design, compact size, and use of commercially available components. These factors make cleaning and maintenance easier, allowing the end user to save money over time. The effective use of Intercomp LS-WIM systems provides a tool to help increase profits through better operation.
